Welcome to Relating - A weekly note from me to you with thoughts, tools, and encouragement for building connected, lasting relationships.

Why Your Partner Gets So Defensive

Have you ever tried to bring something up to your partner… and within seconds, they’re defensive, explaining themselves, or turning it back on you?

And you’re just sitting there thinking:
Wait… how did this turn into a fight? I was just asking a question!

It’s frustrating. It’s exhausting. And over time, it can start to feel really lonely.

And I think what most people don’t realize is that your partner isn’t reacting to what you said… they’re reacting to what they think it means about them.

So while you’re thinking, “I just want more connection…”

They’re hearing, “I’m not good enough.” “I’m doing something wrong.”
Or “I’m failing you.”

And once they hear that, the conversation is no longer a conversation… it’s an attack that requires self-protection.

See if this scenario sounds familiar:

You bring something up.
Your partner gets defensive.
You feel unheard and push back a little more.
They get more defensive.

And now you’re stuck in the same loop… again. Nothing actually gets resolved - and the original issue gets completely lost.

So instead of feeling closer, you both just feel more frustrated and more disconnected.

If you want to break this cycle, you must first understand that you can’t force your partner to stop being defensive. But you can change how often it happens… and completely change how the conversation goes.

Here are a few steps you can take that make a huge difference:

1. Pick your timing on purpose.

If it’s a conversation that matters, don’t bring it up when you’re already irritated or they just walked in the door from work. Have the conversation when things feel calm - not already tense.

2. Talk about your experience - not their behavior.

This is where most conversations go wrong.

Instead of “You never listen to me…” Try “I’ve been feeling a little disconnected lately and I really miss you.”

Same issue. Very different reaction.

3. When they get defensive… don’t push harder.

This is the hardest one, because your instinct is to explain more, prove your point, or correct them, because it’s so frustrating (AHHH!).

But that’s what escalates it. Instead, slow it down, calm your voice and say “Hey, I’m not trying to attack you. I just want us to feel more connected.”

4. Acknowledge them first (Even if you don’t fully agree!).

When people feel understood, they stop defending themselves.

It can be as simple as: “I can see why that felt frustrating.” or “I’m sorry, let me try to say that in another way.”

Acknowledging your partner can shift the entire tone of the conversation.

5. Stop trying to win.

The second it becomes about who’s right or wrong, you’ve already lost the connection.

When you feel the back and forth battle begin, you must shift it to,
“What’s actually going on between us and how do we reconnect?”

6. Know when to pause.

If things are escalating, nothing productive is going to come from the conversation - and you risk making things worse.

So take a break. Then set a time to come back to it later. That could be in 20 minutes or the next day. The key is make sure you have a set date and time to get back to it.

That’s not avoiding the issue, that’s ensuring you have the best chance to find resolution and connection.

So… the next time you have something important to bring up, use these steps. Practice them. And continue to pay attention to what’s underneath your partner’s response, as well as managing your own.

If this is something you’re dealing with right now in your relationship, you’re not alone. In fact, this is one of the most common communication patterns I see as a relationship coach.

But with awareness and the right skills, it’s absolutely a pattern you can change.

If you want to go deeper into this, I break it all down (with examples) in this week’s podcast episode, or you can watch short videos on YouTube as I break it all down in smaller parts.

At the end of the day, you don’t have to get this perfect. But this pattern doesn’t fix itself. Change only happens when even one of you decides to do things a little differently. So start with one small step and see what happens.
