It’s almost Independence Day… A time we celebrate freedom, autonomy, and doing life on our own terms. And many of us carry those same values into our relationships. We aim to stay strong, independent, and self-reliant, even while building a life with someone else. Men are often raised to be strong, dependable, and never show weakness. Women are often taught to be strong too, but in a different way: Don’t rely on anyone. Don’t need a man. So what happens when two people raised to be self-sufficient suddenly have to rely on each other? It can feel like weakness. Or failure. Or giving something up. But the truth is, needing each other in healthy ways isn’t the problem. It’s actually the solution to a strong, connected relationship. Because relationships need some level of dependence. Not total dependence. And not total independence either.
What they really need is interdependence. That means… You can rely on each other without losing yourselves. You can support each other without trying to fix or control. You can be “us” without forgetting “me” or “you.”
It’s this beautiful middle ground.
And honestly? Most of us were never taught how to do that. Try this this week: 3 Ways to Practice Interdependence Say what you need (even if it feels uncomfortable).
Try: “I’m feeling a little overwhelmed today. Would you be up for handling dinner tonight?”
Let your partner show up. Give them a chance to support you. Notice where you’re pulling away to stay “strong.”
If you tend to shut down or go into “I’ll just handle it” mode, pause and ask yourself:
Is this actually helping me or disconnecting me? Tackle the problem side by side.
Instead of “Why are you doing it like that?” try:
“This feels hard for both of us. How do we want to handle it together?”
The Bottom Line:
You don’t have to do everything alone.
And you don’t have to lose yourself in the relationship either.
There is a better way… and it’s where you find real connection. And when you start finding that beautiful middle ground of interdependence, you just might feel the spark again. (Who knows? You might even set off a few fireworks of your own! 😉) Wishing you a week full of connection, courage, and all the right kinds of sparks. ✨ With love and belief in you,
