May is Mental Health Awareness Month, and it’s such an important invitation to pause and check in - with ourselves and with the people we love. Mental health isn’t just about what’s going on inside our own minds. It’s also shaped by the relationships around us. This month is a beautiful opportunity to care for both. I recently had the honor of being a guest on Brainwaves Unplugged: Real Talk on Mental Health, a podcast hosted by the incredible Grace Gallagher, founder of the CKG Foundation. We had a powerful conversation about the deep connection between mental health and relationships, and why caring for one can help protect and strengthen the other. Supportive, connected relationships can be one of the best forms of protection against anxiety, depression, and burnout and a lifeline for those already struggling. Strong relationships help us feel seen, safe, and supported. But the opposite is also true: unhealthy or strained relationships can worsen mental health symptoms, adding isolation, tension, and confusion to an already heavy load. Just like we know we need to proactively care for our mental health with sleep, nutrition, movement, and mindfulness - we need to do the same for our relationships. Here are a few ways to care for your relationship’s emotional health: 💬 Daily Affirmations - Say it out loud! Don’t just think “I appreciate them”… say it! A quick, “Hey, thanks for taking the trash out without me asking,” or “I love the way you make me laugh when I’m stressed” goes a long way in making your partner feel seen and valued. Make it a goal to find something every day. ⏳ Be fully present for 5-10 minutes. Put down the phone, turn off the TV, and just ask, “How was your day, really?” Even a few minutes of true connection can shift the tone of the whole evening. Think quality over quantity. 🤝 Create four points of physical contact each day. A quick hug in the kitchen, holding hands during a walk, a hand on their back while passing by… these small, intentional touches help regulate your nervous system and build a quiet sense of safety and closeness. Physical connection is a powerful way to say “I see you” without words. 🛠️ Don’t wait for a breakdown to do maintenance. Just like you wouldn’t ignore the oil light on your car, don’t ignore the signs of emotional distance or growing tension. You don’t need to be in crisis to benefit from support. Investing in your relationship before things feel urgent can make all the difference. It’s a gift to both of you, and it’s a sign of strength, not failure. 🎧 Listen to the full episode here: Listen on Spotify Listen on Apple It’s an honest, hopeful conversation that I think you’ll really resonate with. And if you’re not already familiar with the CKG Foundation, I hope you’ll check them out. They’re doing incredible work to normalize teen depression and anxiety, reduce stigma, and continue the legacy of Cameron Gallagher, who dreamed of a world where no one felt alone in their struggle. Together, we can keep showing up - for our mental health and our relationships - one intentional step at a time. With love and belief in you,
